As Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts spoke with a group of a half-dozen reporters at Wrigley Field in early September, he used the word "success" as he reflected upon the season with roughly a month left to play.
In the context of the team's final record, no, it wasn't a success. But when you look at what this season was always supposed to be about, there are plenty of individual "success" stories that provided hope for the Cubs' future.
For young players making their way through a full 162-game season for the first time, getting to the finish line is always the goal.
Knowing what it takes to get through a season and understanding how they have to prepare their body for that grind is one of those lessons they learn along the way. Then, when they've become "veterans," they'll have nailed out a routine that they know will get them all the way through year, one that just becomes natural for them the further along they get in their careers.
Happy Monday and happy last week of August, folks.
The Cubs are headed up north to take on the Blue Jays, and they're leaving a couple of starters behind. Later in the week, they'll head to St. Louis with a couple of extra faces when rosters expand, and I'm sure there will be plenty of speculation over the next few days as to who might take up those spots.
It should be an eventful week with at least a couple of players making their MLB debuts, plus it'll be the last time Cubs fans have to see Albert Pujols and Yadier Molina playing in Cardinals jerseys on their TV screens. But first, we have to talk about what's happening in Toronto.
So let's get into it. Here's the first international edition of the Monday morning Cubs thoughts.

Steele struck out five, only allowing 1 run in 6 innings pitched. The Cubs bullpen blew a late 4-0 lead, and the Cubs were able to escape with a 7-5 win in extra innings.…
