We’ve all been there before. Whether in the 300-level at the United Center or on the couch at home, we’ve all yelled ‘SHOOT’ while watching the Chicago Blackhawks. Head coach Jeff Blashill has wanted to yell it from behind the bench this season.
“In general, I thought we passed up tons of shots,” he said after Tuesday’s win over the Pittsburgh Penguins. “I don’t think the shot clock is totally indicative of the game. We didn’t have as many chances as we should have because we didn’t shoot it when we could have. We had opportunities where we could really strike and attack, and we didn’t shoot it. We have to not look for the better play and make sure we have a shooting mentality.”
The lack of shot attempts has been a problem over the past few seasons. Last season, the Blackhawks ranked 30th in shot attempts (3,373) and 15th in shots on goal (1,580). Through seven games this season, they are 24th in shot attempts (262) and 21st in shots on goal (121). While they have improved in this small sample size, they can still be much better.
