CHICAGO — On second-and-10 with 3:15 remaining in the fourth quarter, Minnesota Vikings quarterback Carson Wentz faked a handoff to running back Aaron Jones and then floated a pass to wide-open tight end T.J. Hockenson.
Hockenson first chipped Bears rookie safety Dillon Thieneman at the snap and then slipped past cornerback Jaylon Johnson at the Vikings’ 40-yard line. He made the catch near midfield before Johnson brought him down at the Bears’ 44.
The damage was done.
Hockenson’s catch-and-run turned out to be the longest – and arguably the most backbreaking — play for the Vikings during an 11-play, 5:12 drive that ended with kicker Will Reichard’s field goal.
It gave Minnesota a 9-3 lead late in the fourth quarter on a rainy day at Soldier Field – and the score held up, despite the best efforts of backup quarterback Tyson Bagent.
“We didn’t win,” Johnson said. “We didn’t do enough to win. We didn’t create turnovers and we missed opportunities.”
