Acquisitions, updates & reactions
TRADE — Aug. 3, 4 p.m. | White Sox adding Joey Bart
The White Sox are acquiring C Joey Bart from the Atlanta Braves for RHP Duncan Davitt.
Patrick Norton: Bart, 29, fills a major hole on the White Sox’s roster with Kyle Teel sidelined by injury and Drew Romo and Edgar Quero tasked with shouldering the load in the meantime.
Slashing .237/.325/.366, Bart is under team control through 2027. Acquiring a catcher to learn a new pitching staff midseason always carries risks, but with the additions of Luis Castillo, Huascar Brazobán and Brenton Doyle, Chicago has very clear aspirations to contend for the AL Central crown this year.
UPDATE — Aug. 3, 3:30 p.m. | White Sox still “on the prowl”
About an hour and a half away from the deadline cutoff. It still sounds like the White Sox are active…but what ARE they waiting for? Getz spoke to the team needing a catcher…no catcher has been added. Can they pry away Tyler Stephenson from the Reds? Can they acquire Luis Torrens from the Mets?
Jeff Passan said on ESPN’s Trade Deadline Special that the White Sox “remain on the prowl” for a starter. Is Clay Holmes the apple of their eye? I’d like Sandy Alcantara more, but there hasn’t been much rumbling around Sandy leaving Miami.
TRADE — Aug. 3, 12 p.m. | White Sox get Brenton Doyle
The White Sox have acquired OF Brenton Doyle from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for RHP Mason Adams and SS Carlos Vielma, per the Athletic.
Sean Anderson: The White Sox acquire depth. This is not a player who will replace Tristan Peters. This is not a player who will replace Everson Pereira. Brenton Doyle provides solid outfield depth and has MiLB options.
Doyle just came off the injured list and likely didn’t curry much favor in the new-look Rockies front office after Paul DePodesta took over, with prospect Cole Carrigg performing well at the major-league level.
Vielma is fine to trade. Adams felt like he possibly could have helped this year. Some people (Sales Guy Jim) may be upset that the Sox dealt a “Top 10” prospect because Adams is listed as one on MLB Pipeline. But with the influx of recent draftees, Adams likely isn’t in the White Sox’s Top 10.
TRADE — Aug. 3, 12:45 a.m. | White Sox get Huascar Brazobán
The White Sox have acquired RHP Huascar Brazobán from the New York Mets in exchange for RHP Gabe Davis and Zach Franklin.
Patrick Norton: Brazobán was one of the best relievers on the market, and despite being 36, is under team control through 2030.
His 2.56 ERA in 46 appearances (52.2 IP) jumps off the page, but just about everything in his profile does, too. His barrel rate? In the 98th percentile at 2.3 percent. His hard-hit rate (25.4 percent) lands in the 99th percentile. Considering the cost, this is a big win for a White Sox team that has improved along the margins without parting with top-tier talent at the deadline.
TRADE — Aug. 1, 8:55 p.m. | White Sox get Luis Castillo
The White Sox have acquired RHP Luis Castillo from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for RHP Seranthony Domínguez, OF Nolan Jones and C Boston Smith, per ESPN. The White Sox will absorb the entirety of Castillo’s remaining contract. He is under team control through 2028.
Patrick Norton: It’s certainly an interesting move for the White Sox but I think it’s a solid one. Castillo brings playoff experience, and while he’s struggled a bit in 2026 (3-9, 5.06 ERA), his fastball and sinker are still sitting above 95 mph this year.
Those struggles are ultimately why the White Sox didn’t pay a premium, and it’s why we should still expect another bolstering move for the pitching staff before Monday’s trade deadline.
