After a long month of calls with other front offices leading into the trade deadline, Cubs general manager Carter Hawkins got to exhale for a brief moment before speaking with the media.
As the Cubs get set to host a three-game weekend series with the Marlins, here are four takeaways from that chat with the Cubs' rookie GM.
“We wanted to add power arms in these deals, so that’s what we targeted,” Cubs president of baseball Jed Hoyer told Chicago media after the trade deadline passed at 5 p.m. Tuesday. Even after surprising Cubs fans by not trading away some of his biggest trade chips, Hoyer met his goal by acquiring Hayden Wesneski, Ben Brown and Saúl González…...
ST. LOUIS — Willson Contreras walked into the Cubs’ clubhouse at Busch Stadium at roughly 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. He greeted Cubs right fielder Seiya Suzuki and Suzuki’s translator, Toy Matsushita, as he settled in at his locker. It was a casual greeting from Contreras, one he’d probably give to any given teammate on any given game day. At the…...

It's a special Monday morning in the baseball calendar, folks.
The Cubs have no games left to play before the trade deadline at 5 p.m. on Tuesday. Right now, at 7 a.m. on Monday, the only big-league deal the Cubs have made is trading Chris Martin to the Dodgers on Saturday. Everyone else, as of this moment, are still members of the Chicago Cubs.
The reality is, though, that there are a few who'll likely be dealt elsewhere in the next 34 hours. The Cubs are sellers, and they have some trade pieces — from veterans on cheap deals to fan favorites — that could net them prospects of use. That's just where the team is at this point in the rebuild.
But we'll have much more on that this week. I'll be in St. Louis for the trade deadline and its aftermath, so CHGO will have a lot of content to come. Until then, I've got some thoughts on the Cubs and what's ahead for them over the next two days. So without further ado, here are my Monday morning thoughts, the day-before-the-deadline edition.
It’s very likely going to happen. Or at least, all signs are pointing in that direction.
Willson Contreras has been a part of trade speculation since the beginning of spring training (and there was a little bit of that talk circulating last season, too). As far as Contreras has revealed, the team hasn’t discussed an extension with him since the season started, and with him set to hit free agency this offseason, the Cubs would risk losing him for nothing but a compensatory draft pick (if they do extend a qualifying offer) in the case that they don’t trade him by Tuesday’s deadline.
So, barring some seismic shift over the next two days, Contreras will not be a Cub after the trade deadline. That’s the reality of the situation, and despite pleas by fans for an extension, it seems like just about everybody has come to terms with that.
But enough has been said on that front over the last couple of weeks. If the Cubs are reading, maybe this is what could help them make a last-minute change of heart. So, here are four reasons the Cubs shouldn’t trade Willson Contreras.
