Had it not been for Miguel Amaya's progress in the second half of 2024, addressing the catching situation would be an even bigger question left for the Chicago Cubs to answer.
The offensive turnaround was the most obvious improvement. Through July 3 (190 plate appearances), he was hitting .186 with a .504 OPS and a 46 wRC+. For much of that stretch, he was paired with Yan Gomes, who eventually got released on June 21 as the duo's production ranked among the worst catching setups in the majors.
The Cubs weren't going to cut a young catcher like Amaya (who'll turn 26 next March) at that time, but they needed more.
