Instant Reactions: Packers find new way to stun Bears, block field goal as time expires

Not again.

The Bears found another incredibly dreadful way to lose to the Green Bay Packers, this time on a blocked field goal as time expired. Karl Brooks got his hand on Cairo Santos’ 46-yard attempt to seal the 11th straight win in the series for the Packers.

Randall Cobb. Jordy Nelson. Now, Christian Watson has his signature back-breaking long reception to bury the Bears late against the Packers.

Chicago’s offense had energy. New offensive coordinator Thomas Brown’s plan of attack in his first week? Make sure Caleb Williams gets rid of the ball. Williams was quick, and decisive and put the Bears in a spot to come away with a stunning victory after a week of turmoil at Halas Hall.

Chicago elected to wind the clock down after getting the ball to Green Bay’s 29 with 30 seconds left, and it’s a decision that’ll haunt Bears fans who haven’t witnessed a Chicago victory against the Packers since 2018.

Packers 20, Bears 19.

This latest Bears and Packers matchup ended like many of the previous ones – with Chicago losing and Bears fans left feeling deflated. The Bears looked better offensively under offensive coordinator Thomas Brown, but scoring only 19 points still leaves much to be desired. Defensively, the Bears had an opportunity to close out the game with Chicago up 19-14 with 4:27 left in the fourth quarter. But the Packers went 78 yards in four plays and easily took the lead with a Jordan Love 1-yard touchdown run. Still, Chicago had an opportunity to secure a victory with a game-winning field goal, but Cairo Santos’ 46-yard attempt was blocked – ending the game for good.

That’s how it always goes with the Bears and Packers. That’s how it always goes.

Caleb Williams put the Bears in position to win in the 4th quarter. That is what I am going to choose to remember from this game which is extremely painful for the 2024 Bears. Thomas Brown made a huge difference. The Bears defense gave up a late touchdown and the O-line lost on the final play of the game. Brutal, but there is some sun shining despite the postgame gloom.

Oh, man. Just when I thought the Bears had finally gotten past the Hail Mary meltdown in Washington. Thomas Brown benefitted Caleb Williams the Bears’ offense in Brown’s first week as offensive coordinator. But the gut punch, to lose on a blocked 46-yarder after bleeding the clock down instead of getting closer. Just brutal. Mentally deflating. We’ll see how the Bears rebound next week, but that felt like it might’ve been their best and only remaining shot to get back on track.
