The Chicago Sky just received some bulletin board material if they want it.
ESPN’s Michael Voepel released his preseason WNBA Power Rankings on Monday morning and has the Chicago Sky ranked 12th — dead last.
Preseason power rankings were always a talking point on media day with former Sky coach James Wade and his players as the Sky were often ranked lower than they saw themselves.
Will new coach Teresa Weatherspoon see the rankings the same?
Weatherspoon mentioned recently that “there’s no better place than to be counted out,” and prophetically, plenty of her comments and responses can be applied to multiple contexts of life, or instances in sports that come after she’s spoken.
This is an instance where said quote can surely be applied again.
This is intriguing, considering the home runs the team hit in the 2024 WNBA Draft via adding Kamilla Cardoso, Angel Reese, and Brynna Maxwell.
Nonetheless, this will be a season where the Sky are publicly betting on themselves, a whole lot more than entertaining the thought of proving anyone else wrong — but you better believe they’ll notice and make note of all instances like here, where they’re being counted out.
Meanwhile, reigning back-to-back champion Las Vegas Aces ranked first in Voepel’s power rankings. Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever are ranked eighth.
The Chicago Sky kick-off their 2024 campaign next Wednesday, May 15, in Dallas, at 7 pm.
Their home opener is Saturday, May 25, vs Connecticut, at 7 pm.
