Why the Bears’ run defense regressed to one of the worst in the league

On the first run play for the San Francisco 49ers last Sunday against the Chicago Bears, backup running back Isaac Guerendo was stopped for no gain. It was one of the best defensive plays from the Bears all game.
However, those stops were scarce in the 38-13 loss to the 49ers. San Francisco finished with 131 rushing yards and scored three touchdowns on the ground.
In 2023, the run defense was one of the Bears' strongest attributes, but after 14 weeks this season, the unit is ranked among the league's worst in almost every statistical category.
Here is where the 2024 Bears rank after 13 games played compared to the team's performance last season.
