LAKE FOREST — The Bears drafted Gervon Dexter Sr. with the No. 53 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft on Friday night. The defensive lineman from Florida will provide the front seven with an interior defensive lineman who can help create pressure inside on opposing quarterback while also stopping the run.

Dexter registered 55 total tackles, two sacks, three quarterbacks hits, 20 hurries, an interception and batted down one pass last season for the Gators. According to Pro Football Focus, Dexter lined up for a majority of his snaps in the B Gap (515), giving him good experience for his new role in the Bears defense as the 3-tech. He also posted a run defense grade of 70.

“I think I can bring that versatility and wherever my plays may be, I’m going to contribute that way,” Dexter said on Friday. “I’ll do it my 100%. Whichever way. I’m looking to compete, looking to get better and win some games.”

Last season, the Bears only sacked the quarterback 20 times (last in the NFL). The defensive line accounted for 10.5 of those sacks. The rushing defense was nearly as bad, allowing 2,674 yards on the ground, which was the second-worst last season.

Back in December, Matt Eberflus described the 3-tech position in his defense as “the engine that makes everything go.” Dexter was asked if he describes himself as a player in the same way that his new coach talks about the all-important position.

“Yeah, for sure,” Dexter said. “I’m that guy who can get going and cause havoc and work the game. So, yeah, that’s definitely how I would describe myself.”
