Equanimeous St. Brown is entering his first season with the Chicago Bears after spending the first four years of his career with the Green Bay Packers.
St. Brown was taken in the seventh round of the 2018 NFL Draft. His best season was his rookie year when he had 21 catches for over 300 yards. He suffered a high ankle sprain that sidelined him for the entire 2019 season. Since, St. Brown failed to recapture that same magic he had as a rookie.

Advanced Stat to Know: St. Brown is coming off career lows in average depth of target (10.3) and yards before catch per reception (4.4).
St. Brown’s best performance last season came Week 8 against the Arizona Cardinals where he caught both of his targets for a season-high 43 yards and also added 11 more yards on the ground.
The 54 total yards from scrimmage accounted for 47% of his season total.
Can Equanimeous St. Brown take on a larger role in Chicago?
St. Brown has a good blend of size (6-foot-5) and speed (4.48-40). He found success as a rookie despite being drafted in the seventh round. The problem for St. Brown is he has steadily regressed since that season.
The offense was not built to go through him. Green Bay had Davante Adams who saw 149 or more targets each season St. Brown was there. The Packers also heavily targeted running backs and tight ends at a decent clip. They also had multiple wide receivers that Aaron Rodgers liked to throw to including Allen Lazard, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Randall Cobb.
As the years wore on, St. Brown’s slice of the target share got smaller.
Things are different in Chicago. The wide receiver room is wide open. The Bears have addressed this position a few times during the offseason as they are looking to field the best group of players to surround Justin Fields.
If St. Brown can demonstrate in training camp that he can be a guy Fields can lean on, he will see more action than his last couple of seasons in Green Bay.
At 6-foot-5, St. Brown is a big target for Fields. He has the potential to be dangerous with the ball in his hands as he moves well in space.
If anyone has an idea on how to best utilize the receiver in the Bears’ new offense, it’s offensive coordinator Luke Getsy who has worked with St. Brown in Green Bay since 2019.
St. Brown may not become a receiver who sees a heavy workload. Nothing indicates he’s a player that should get a ton of targets. However, he does possess the potential to be a solid contributor for the Bears in a slightly larger role than he had with the Packers.
The fresh start in Chicago may be exactly what St. Brown needs in order to take his career to the next level. At least that is what the Bears are banking on.
St. Brown has an opportunity to carve out a serious role for himself. For now, it’s best to keep expectations low. But it’s also okay to have some optimism surrounding the 25-year-old.
Prediction: Makes the team as WR4.
