DETROIT — After months of knowing who the Chicago Bears next quarterback was going to be, it finally became official on Thursday Night.
The Chicago Bears selected USC’s Caleb Williams with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
A new era of Chicago Bears football has officially begun, and Williams provides the organization with a real opportunity to break through the quarterback purgatory that has plagued the team for almost its entire existence.
In order for that to happen, it’ll take someone who isn’t just talented on the football field but also an individual who can handle the expectations and pressure that automatically comes with playing in a city like Chicago.
Luckily, everything that Williams has done up to this point in his life has prepared him to be that guy.
Williams can do everything that is required at the quarterback position and so much more. On his way to winning the Heisman Trophy in 2022, Williams showed how deadly he can be with his arm, throwing for 4,537 yards, 42 touchdowns and just five interceptions, and with his legs, rushing for 382 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Despite having a leaky offensive line at USC, Williams still produced highlight play after highlight play. In what was considered a “down” season for Williams in 2023, he still threw for 3,633 yards, 30 touchdowns and five interceptions and added another 136 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground.
He has an ability to make the impossible possible. Whether it’s an absolute dart throw in tight coverage to extending plays after breaking through an arm tackle to delivering an off-platform sidearm pass to a receiver in stride, Williams can do it all on the field.
He also has the mindset needed to be the face of the franchise. Being center stage isn’t anything new to Williams. If anything, the spotlight he will consistently be in as the quarterback in Chicago will only continue what he has been used to since he started throwing a football.
He’s faced adversity, which will inevitably come at some point throughout his professional career, when he transferred from Oklahoma to USC and also during the ups and downs of the 2023 season.
He’s been scrutinized in the media for being too emotional, painting his nails, being labeled as a bad teammate and plenty more.
Regardless of how much negative coverage Williams was getting, the 22-year-old never let any of it phase him. He will occasionally clap back at people on X if he feels necessary, but never does so with malicious intent.
Williams is different from what the Bears have had at the quarterback position. And different is exactly what is needed to turn the franchise around.
It’s been too long since the Bears have been considered a legitimate threat in the NFC and within the division. Williams has the potential to change that early in his NFL career and has a realistic shot to make the Bears a contender for the NFC North in his rookie season, especially given the roster he is now joining.
In Williams’ mind, being competitive is a given. He aspires for so much more. On his phone screen saver, which shows his goals, is “Superbowls x 8.”
If he can get anywhere close to those milestones, he will go down as one of the all-time greats to ever play in Chicago and also in the NFL.
