LAS VEGAS — Norman Powell, 33, might not seem like the splashy free agency acquisition some may have been seeking when the Bulls entered free agency with a league-leading $54 million in cap space.
Powell’s two-year, $45 million deal, which includes a team option, is an attractive piece for the Bulls for a variety of reasons. Not only will his talent help raise the floor of the group, but he also projects to be a commodity at the deadline. But perhaps most importantly, Powell is an 11-year veteran in the NBA with an All-Star appearance and a Championship in his past.
He’s had an unorthodox, circuitous career which should be a valuable addition in the locker room for a group largely comprised of players under 25.
In fact, the Bulls have 14 players under roster going into next season and Powell is the only one over the age of 30. As much as this young Bulls team needs supplementary talent, they also need a veteran who plays at a high level and can teach these kids how to be professionals.
