100% agree. I think another point that people miss is that any salary retention for Hall would have taken up a slot anyways. In fact if they traded Hall and helped retain McKinnon’s salary in two different transactions, that would have taken up the last remaining retention slot as well. This way, if they want to let’s trade Seth Jones and retain a portion of his cap hit, they can still do that.

Finally, mid season cap space is like use it or lose it. If they choose not to spend to the cap, then it not like there is any benefit in subsequent seasons.

Thanks for putting a thoughtful/logical post out about this. I am just baffled at how negative the reaction has been – both from the fans and other writers.

The team that risked it all in hopes that a 29 year old Rantanen signs with them gets an A+. But a team that gets the best possible return for a veteran they decided to move on from anyways gets an F.
