The biggest problem for the Chicago Blackhawks this season has been their defense. Head coach Jeff Blashill says his young team keeps beating itself by making fatal mistakes in its own end.
The good news is that things have improved slightly, but they still aren’t good enough. Two goals in Saturday’s 4-0 loss to the Dallas Stars can be blamed on poor defensive play. Arttu Hyry’s second goal came off a failed Cole Smith breakout, which left the Blackhawks caught in a slow-line chance. Roope Hintz’s goal, the Stars’ fourth and final, started with a lost puck battle below the goal line and a pitiful effort by Frank Nazar to separate Hintz from the puck.
The defense looked good to start the game on Friday night, which you wanted to see after a week of practice. However, it didn’t last past the first period of a 4-1 loss to the Montreal Canadiens.
