We shouldn’t be 14 games into an 84-game schedule wondering whether a team has any heart, but that’s where we are with the Chicago Blackhawks. After Thursday’s embarrassing loss to the Detroit Red Wings, when Patrick Kane said “everything went wrong,” the frustration and anger around this team hit a new high.
“We’ve had a lot of games throughout this season where we did a lot of good things and maybe beat ourselves with critical mistakes,” head coach Jeff Blashill said in Detroit. “Tonight, to me, wasn’t that at all. It’s a step backward. Because you just had too many guys that weren’t skating, didn’t compete hard enough or [didn’t have] enough attention to detail.”
Are the Blackhawks’ problems caused by poor coaching, bad roster construction, a lack of talent, or a failure to execute? The real answer is a combination of all of those, which means there is no quick fix.
