Morning Chirps: Blackhawks waste rare dominating 5v5 performance

The Chicago Blackhawks played one of their best 5v5 games of the season and held a dangerous team at bay for most of the night. In the end, none of that mattered as the Toronto Maple Leafs used a couple of fortunate bounces, timely scoring, and great goaltending to roll to a 4-1 victory.
The Maple Leafs scored the lone goal of the first period. Somehow, Auston Matthews was left alone during a line change, and he quickly tapped the puck home past Arvid Soderblom. The Blackhawks dominated the second period (more on that below), but the home team had the only goal. John Tavares’ shot deflected off Alex Vlasic’s stick and hopped over Soderblom’s shoulder.
