Chicago Blackhawks (12-23-2, 26 pts) vs St. Louis Blues (17-17-4, 38 pts)
4:00 p.m. CT – Wrigley Field
TV: TNT (Albert/Olczyk/Boucher)
Radio: WGN 720 AM (Wiedeman/Murray)
The time has finally come for the Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues to meet each other in the 2025 Winter Classic at Wrigley Field. It has been 16 years since the 2009 Winter Classic at Wrigley Field that showcased the then up-and-coming Blackhawks against the defending 2008 Stanley Cup Champion Detroit Red Wings. Things will feel different this time around as the Blues and Blackhawks both find themselves out of the current Stanley Cup Playoff picture, with Chicago dead-last in the league.
But even in the midst of a four-game losing streak and having been outscored 11-3 in their last two games, the Blackhawks are looking at this Winter Classic as an opportunity to “reset.”
“We haven’t liked the result in the last two games, but we haven’t deserved a different result,” Seth Jones said following Monday’s practice. “This is an opportunity to take a step back and enjoy this moment. Friends and family are in town and these games are a whole lot better when you win.”
Connor Bedard has a season-high four-game point streak after getting the lone goal in the 5-1 loss to the Dallas Stars on Sunday night. On Monday, Bedard said playing in this Winter Classic has been, “One of the coolest experiences of my life.” His 32 points in 37 games this season is a 0.86 points per game pace, just off his rookie season pace of 0.90 last year. He is set to become the 14th teenager to play in an NHL outdoor game and the youngest since Auston Matthews in the 2017 Centennial Classic.
The elements may play a factor into the game with temperatures at puck drop reaching the low-40s/upper-30s and a slight chance of a rain/snow mix. There is rain expected in the afternoon, which could affect the ice surface and, as Seth Jones pointed out, would force the Blackhawks to play a simple game, something that they have to continue to do regardless of which ice surface they are playing on.
That said, Jones and rookie Frank Nazar both expressed some hope for snow during the game. “That’s the dream, right?” said Nazar following Monday’s practice.
