LAKE FOREST, Ill. — If Bears coach Ben Johnson wants to play games with his words and actions when it comes to who will start at quarterback in Week 3, so be it. All NFL coaches do it – and this is the first time that Caleb Williams is dealing with a serious injury under his watch.
“We’re at a point right now … not sure who the starter is going to be on Monday night,” he said. “We’ll let this thing play out and we’ll go from there.”
All that said, it looks like that will be veteran Case Keenum against the Philadelphia Eagles. He and undrafted rookie Miller Moss were the only two quarterbacks on the field at Halas Hall on Wednesday. Backup Tyson Bagent stayed home with a concussion.
“I sent those guys the plan that we had as of last night,” Johnson said before practice. “We’re working through it. It’s good. Caleb is out there in walk-through. He’s actively involved as well. And so it’s been good dialogue with all those guys just making sure we’re accounting for any issues that could come up in this game and that we have sound ball plays and that we can go out there and play fast.”
This is where my takeaways column begins as the Bears turn the page on Week 2 and head into Week 3 against the Eagles.
1. The Bears are down to their No. 3 quarterback but there are worse options than veteran Case Keenum.
They’re not turning to Jonathan Quinn.
Or Jeff Blake or Caleb Hanie or Todd Collins or Jimmy Clausen.
The Bears are turning to a quarterback who is not only in his 15th season but who has been with the team since April 2025.
