LAKE FOREST, Ill. — Bears coach Ben Johnson played coy on Wednesday. And he did so with a smile, a “Hmm” or two and a variety of different answers.
Who is starting at quarterback for the Bears in Week 4 against the Jets?
“We got three guys,” Johnson said at Halas Hall before a walk-through practice. “We’ll work through the week and see where they’re at.”
But there are only two QBs available for Sunday. Caleb Williams – according to Johnson – wasn’t going to participate in the walk-through. He’s still dealing with his right hamstring injury.
It’s either Case Keenum or Tyson Bagent.
And that decision has been made but Johnson isn’t revealing it, at least in the middle of the week. He’d rather give the Jets and coach Aaron Glenn – a friend and former colleague with the Detroit Lions – more to do in their prep work for the Bears and his offense.
“The direction’s already been made,” Johnson said. “So we’ll be in good shape for Sunday.”
This is where this week’s takeaways column begins.
1. The most revealing line from Ben Johnson about what’s ahead at quarterback came after the Bears’ 27-7 thumping of the Eagles on Monday Night Football.
