I’ve enjoyed your work at the Athletic, and I’m glad you made the move to a place I’m already paying for 🙂

One thing you touched on is beyond the contract date alignment, I assume there is no way they do this without getting a pretty clear sign that Ben is happy with Ryan. I don’t remember which, but back in Jan there was a screaming head that was arguing that Ben didn’t want the Bears job because of Ryan, and he would go to LV where he could pick his own GM, and furthermore, the Bears should fire Ryan specifically so they could get Ben. Turns out that wasn’t the concern some of the local media was worried it would be.

I’m speculating a bit, but there seems to be a lot of evidence that Ben and his staff had a good deal of input on the picks, starting with Loveland, but also DA’s guy Hyppolite, the Al Harris pick of Zah, and maybe a few others. That approach seems aligned with Ben’s empowerment of his staff, and I’m expecting to see good results.

Big fan of yours, Jahns! Looking forward to another fun year of Bears football with you and the CHGO crew. Great article, and yes, having GM, coach and quarterback aligned is a good thing. Poles has been a C+ GM throughout this rebuild, given the lessons learned, let’s see how he performs in the coming years.
