LAKE FOREST, Ill. – When Bears coach Ben Johnson doesn’t like how a practice went, he’ll always tell you about it – even if it’s days later.
The offense’s performance in Tuesday’s practice – which included the first fully live period of training camp – bothered him.
“We tell them the truth in the meetings,” Johnson said Thursday. “They take what is said in the building very seriously. We have a bunch of professionals; they want to be great, and so when it’s good, we let them know that it’s good. When it’s not good enough, we let them know.
“Two days ago, practice was not good enough as a whole team, and certainly not as an offense. When you have false starts, delay of games, dropped passes, center-quarterback exchange (issues), it’s really not a good practice. You can’t evaluate the defense, either. So we have a long way to go.”
Johnson said that as an answer to a question about quarterback Caleb Williams before the Bears’ longest practice thus far in camp. After a light practice on Wednesday, the offense responded with a strong day on Field 1 of Halas Hall.
Practice ended with Williams threading a four-yard touchdown pass to receiver Luther Burden III in the back of the end zone to conclude a two-minute situational drill – 1:41 remaining in the game, offense down 24-21 with two timeouts, ball on their own 35 – and earning the “win” for the offense.
