CHICAGO — On first-and-goal from the Minnesota Vikings’ six-yard line, Bears quarterback Caleb Williams scrambled to his left toward the end zone.

He didn’t make it, sliding down untouched at the line of scrimmage. Williams remained on the ground in pain before being helped off the field by trainers.

Williams went into the medical tent on the sideline before being carted to the locker room with a towel draped over his head, saluting the crowd as he exited the field.

He was later ruled out with a hamstring injury.

Williams finished the game 15-for-26 passing with an interception. The Bears lost their home opener, 9-3.

The CHGO staff reacts…

Adam Jahns: Well, this is why the Bears were always hesitant to trade Tyson Bagent. You need him for the worst-case scenario – and here we are. Caleb Williams is hurt. Updates are coming. But it didn’t look good. It capped off just an awful day for the Bears. The nonstop rain, the many penalties, the missed field goal, the fumble at the goal line. All of it was bad, bad, bad.

Adam Hoge: Worst. Case. Scenario. Caleb Williams’ injury looked bad. And somehow the offense looked worse. The complexion of this season completely changes now, but this is why the Bears have Ben Johnson. He loves Tyson Bagent and will find a way to make the offense work. Right? Right?

Patrick Norton: Williams was 18 feet from giving the Bears their first lead on Sunday. Instead, the result of the game seemed furthest from anybody’s mind at Soldier Field, even despite a near Herculean comeback effort from Tyson Bagent.

Greg Braggs Jr: Devastated? What other words are there to say? Caleb Williams had the same look that Coby Bryant had as he was being taken off the field at training camp. Gutted for Caleb. Still waiting for official word, so it’s probably inappropriate to write his eulogy on the season. But injuries like this, potentially, do not just impact next week or next month or even next year. Luckily, the Bears have Ben Johnson as the Captain of their ship. Looks like the Chicago just got hit by a perfect storm.
