Bears’ third-string quarterback Tyson Bagent and the Bears’ offense controlled just about every aspect of the game on Sunday at Soldier Field.
It helps to have a running back like Kyle Monangai. Monangai led the charge for the Bears on the ground, scoring twice on 30 carries for 146 yards.
Bagent finished the game 25-for-34 passing for 268 yards and an interception.
He was also intercepted three more times by the Jets on plays called back for defensive penalties. One was a free play heave intended for receiver Kalif Raymond.
Bagent was largely efficient in his first start since 2023 – though his start technically came as a wide receiver, with Case Keenum taking the first snap of the game under center before hustling off to the sideline.
Receiver Rome Odunze led the Bears with 94 yards on six receptions.
Jets quarterback Geno Smith finished 8-for-15 passing for 119 yards and a touchdown.
The CHGO staff reacts to the win…
Adam Jahns: Bears coach Ben Johnson didn’t stick with the “hot hand” at quarterback in Week 4. But he did at running back against the Jets, riding out Kyle Monangai to the win. Monangai finished with a career-high 30 carries for 136 yards and two touchdowns. Tyson Bagent played well in his first start since his rookie season but what the Bears did on the ground was the story. They imposed their will on the Jets. The Bears finished with 232 yards rushing on a whopping 54 carries.
Patrick Norton: This was the Bears’ first win under Ben Johnson and Dennis Allen without forcing a takeaway. They didn’t need one, controlling the clock and winning the time-of-possession battle, 42:45 to 17:15. Impressive game plan from the jump.
Greg Braggs Jr: The MONANGAI!!! I’ve been asking to feed the former 7th-round pick, and today Ben Johnson did just that. Maybe for today they rode the hot hand but while I think both running backs can be very effective in this offense, the MONANGAI gives this offense a certain attitude that I absolutely love. Keep feeding him.
