Ben Johnson certainly caused a stir in August when he declared he wanted to have the highest-scoring offense in NFL history.
He made it clear to The Athletic’s Dan Pompei that he’s eyeing more than just Super Bowls.
“I want more than that,” he said. “I want to have the highest-scoring offense ever, which happens to be the 2013 Denver Broncos. I know how many points per game they scored (37.9), and I want to surpass them. I want shutouts. I want blowouts.”
In this league, toeing the line between confidence and arrogance will certainly ruffle some feathers. And that happened quickly for Johnson.
After opening the season with 59 points against the Carolina Panthers, the criticism came flooding in after a 9-3 loss to the Vikings in Week 2. Never mind that the game was played in pouring rain and that starting quarterback Caleb Williams was injured.
The ridiculous scrutiny Williams received for being carted off with a significant hamstring injury was somewhat predictable. Those who made up their mind about Williams long ago are struggling to accept his success. But the anonymous sources that came for Johnson were another thing.
