When Ben Johnson declared that goal to The Athletic’s Dan Pompei in August, it seemed wild, but I think everyone is quickly learning to take Johnson’s word at face value. 

After scoring 59 points in Sunday’s opener against the Panthers (why didn’t Johnson go for two and try to hit 60?), the Bears are well ahead of pace to challenge the record. Granted, it was just one game. But everyone – fans, media and even the Bears themselves – probably needs to recalibrate expectations under Johnson, who very clearly is one of the best offensive minds in football. 

In 2013, Peyton Manning’s Broncos (coached by John Fox and Adam Gase!) scored 49 points in their opener against the Ravens, 10 fewer points than the Bears did Sunday. And the most points the Broncos scored in a single game that year was 52.
