LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Bears quarterback Caleb Williams was named the NFC offensive player of the week for his outstanding performance against the Dallas Cowboys but he doesn’t want to hear about it. Coach Ben Johnson already tried.
“He came in today completely unfazed by it,” Johnson said before practice at Halas Hall on Wednesday. “I tried to recognize him in front of the group and he wasn’t having it. Very stoic. He’s already on to the next game. He knows he needs to have an even better performance here this week to give us the best chance to win.”
In the Bears’ 31-14 win against the Cowboys, Williams was 19-for-28 passing for 298 yards and four touchdowns. He led all quarterbacks in touchdown passes in Week 3 and also tied his career-best mark. Williams’ 142.6 passer rating against the Cowboys was a new career high.
Building upon his success against Dallas on the road in Las Vegas against the Raiders is the next step.
“I think what I’m most impressed at with him and his process is the next day he really locks everything in from the day before,” Johnson said. “We don’t have to go back and revisit it again. He’s a quick study in that regard, and because of that, we can load up the game plan more each week. Week 3 it was a lot more than Week 1. Hopefully, that’s our new normal here going forward, is not just for him but the entire offense: we can have a little bit more in the game plan to attack some of these defenses. Because he’s doing that and his comfort level is growing – we’re able to grow as an offense.”
