Jahns’ 5 takeaways: Bears’ physical play style stood out early and often in Seattle — and Ben Johnson loved it

SEATTLE — In the middle of the Bears’ victorious locker room inside Lumen Field, safety Cam Lewis didn’t receive a game ball from coach Ben Johnson. But the veteran did receive a special shoutout for what he did on the Seattle Seahawks’ third offensive snap of the game.

“We said that was going to be a physical football game,” Johnson told his team. “And let me tell you something, I knew it was going to be on that first third down of the game. Cam Lewis. Holy s—. … And you carried it throughout the full 60 minutes.”

It was a violent hit on receiver Tory Horton over the middle on third-and-5 that led to an incompletion — and a pool report. Why wasn’t a flag thrown on Lewis?

“There was no forcible contact to the head and neck area of the receiver,” referee Shawn Smith told PFWA pool reporter Brady Henderson. “That’s what we ruled on the field.”

This is where this week’s takeaways column begins.

Safety Cam Lewis came through first. It’s why Ben Johnson made sure to commend what he did.

And then came linebacker Devin Bush’s spinning, here’s-my-back hit on quarterback Sam Darnold, who slid late over the middle on a scramble on third-and-8.
