For the first time all season, the Bulls shot better than 27.9 percent from three in a game.
That’s right. In their 1-3 start to the season, they reach the 28 percent threshold in any of their games. That is, until they went 18-of-42 against the Knicks.
Making 43 percent of your threes puts you in a good position to win most nights, and yet the Knick still beat the Bulls 133-127, dropping Chicago to 1-4. So it goes, especially when the opponent is liable to make 22 threes at a 46 percent clip.
This early in the season, the samples sizes are too small to ring the alarm bells. Recall, at this time last year, the Bulls were unbelievably 5-0, shooting over 40 percent as a team from beyond the arc.
But so far this year, it’s been the opposite. Even after finally seeing the ball go through the net against the Knicks, the Bulls are last in the league, shooting 27.6 percent from three. Yet, their shot profile indicates that they are taking the rights shots; they are number one location effective field goal percentage — the team’s estimated effective field goal if they shot league average from each spot on the court.
“I’m not sure, analytically, where we are, but I think we’re good,” Josh Giddey said. “And when we get there, we generate good shots. And we’re probably shooting the ball as bad as anybody in the league right now. We’re generating really good looks. So, obviously, the averages will start to balance out eventually.”
