CHICAGO — On third-and-9 from the Bears’ 10-yard line with five minutes left in the fourth quarter, Bears quarterback Caleb Williams stepped up in a clean pocket and delivered a laser beam to wide receiver Rome Odunze’s back shoulder.
The Patriots covered it almost perfectly. Safety Kevin Byard III almost got a fingertip on the pass. And cornerback Marcus Jones almost jumped Odunze’s route.
But the Bears have Caleb Williams.
“Be decisive, let it rip,” Williams said.
Odunze twisted his body back toward the ball and made the catch for a 21-yard gain to extend the Bears’ drive and keep the ball in the offense’s hands with a six-point lead. Kicker Cairo Santos would later make a career-long 58-yard field goal to finish the drive and extend the lead to nine in what finished as a 30-24 win for the Bears on Thursday Night Football.
“That’s something I always preach to myself each week before every game,” Williams said. “Be decisive. Decisiveness wins.”
And so the Bears did, despite quarterback Drake Maye and the Patriots’ best efforts.
