LAKE FOREST, Ill. – It’s not surprising that quarterback Caleb Williams and other starters are being held out of the Bears’ preseason opener against the Cleveland Browns on Saturday.
The real question is whether we see Williams at all this preseason, especially with practices scheduled with the Cincinnati Bengals and the Tennessee Titans later this month. The practices are both two days before the scheduled exhibition games.
“I don’t know that I need to see game snaps,” coach Ben Johnson said. “What we’re trying to assess is the volume throughout the week and making sure we’re hitting our benchmarks to make sure our team is ready to go for a 17-plus game season. That’s what we’re looking to do. And so each individual is a little bit different.”
This is where the Bears’ sports science department factors in. The team logs data on every player from every practice – and all of it goes into their decision-making.
