LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Two first downs and the offense wins the drill. That was the goal for quarterback Caleb Williams and the rest of the Bears starters when they took the field backed up to their own 1-yard line.

“The whole objective is get the ball in play,” Williams said. 

On the first play, Williams thought he earned a free five yards and deep shot by getting the defensive linemen to jump. No flag was thrown, though, as Williams’ pass to receiver Rome Odunze sailed out of bounds.

The fireworks came on the next play. Williams evaded the defense’s rush and hit Odunze, who took off for a 50-yard catch-and-run. Safety Dillon Thieneman finally chased down Odunze to prevent a touchdown.
