LAKE FOREST, Ill. — Bears right tackle Darnell Wright had two people to thank for his new $116 million contract: Jesus and offensive line coach Dan Roushar.
“(Ben Johnson) said I owed Dan a loan or something, which I probably do,” Wright said Wednesday. “That guy has helped me a tremendous amount.”
That begins with Roushar’s daily approach, which Wright finds refreshing.
“He’s consistent every day in what he does and what he says,” Wright said. “He’s consistent in what he’s telling you. He’s honest. Some coaches I’ve had in the past or some coaches in the league, they’re not very good teachers. They see a guy with talent and blah, blah, blah, but they can’t really convey what it is and teach you. You still need to be taught.”
As he spoke for the first time since signing his new contract on Tuesday, Wright’s place in the Bears’ future became more clear. He was more gregarious than usual as he explained why he enjoys playing for Dan Roushar, highlighted his connection with coach Ben Johnson and detailed why he’s thankful for general manager Ryan Poles.
