There are several reasons why the Cubs opted to take an aggressive trade deadline approach this year.
The first is simple: The Cubs boast one of the best records and run differentials in baseball, with strong playoff odds. They are a team that has proven it can handle adversity.
To augment the roster, Jed Hoyer’s front office gave up six of the organization’s Top 30 prospects (as ranked by MLB.com) and another player (Moisés Ballesteros) who has spent the last several years ranked highly in the farm system before graduating earlier this year.
The Cubs had to give up talent to get talent.
But Hoyer and Co. were also extremely selective in the prospects they chose to part ways with.
