LAKE FOREST, Ill. – As it usually does, Bears training camp opened with an injury report.
General manager Ryan Poles went through his team’s wounded, one by one.
Linebacker T.J. Edwards? He’s dealing with an issue with his right calf.
“He was training offsite, came back in with a sore calf – soft tissue,” Poles said. “We don’t see that as anything major. Shouldn’t be too long with that.”
Rookie linebacker Keyshaun Elliott? He’s been bothered by a back problem – but he’s also expected to return soon.
“We took care of that,” Poles said Tuesday at Halas Hall. “He’s in really good shape. If you saw him walking around, you’d have no idea. He’s running. Obviously, there is a return-to-play protocol, where you are getting back to being a football player in terms of your strength, your conditioning. So he’ll be in that.”
And then Poles came to nickel back Kyler Gordon on his list. The optimism that he had earlier dissipated, while his frustration became apparent.
This is where my takeaways column begins.
