FAQs
How does injured reserve work before the season?
Beginning last season, teams can now designate up to two players for injured reserve on cut day to return during the regular season after missing four games. Before last year, players would need to be carried through the deadline and placed on IR from the initial list.
Players placed on IR before Tuesday without this designation are out for the season unless the team and player agree to an injury settlement.
What’s the difference between being waived and having your contract terminated?
A player is waived — and subject to waivers — if he has not accrued four years of NFL service time. Vested veterans are released with their contracts “terminated”, allowing them to sign with other teams immediately.
When can the Bears claim players waived by other teams?
On Wednesday at 11 a.m., the league processes claims on players waived ahead of Tuesday’s deadline. Priority is determined by reverse standings order from last season. The Bears have the 10th-highest priority.

Reactions
This section will be updated with instant reactions from Adam Hoge, Adam Jahns and Patrick Norton on certain cuts.
- Norton on Toure (Aug. 24 – 10:15 a.m.): Toure spent all of last year with the Bears’ practice squad. He had a really strong first couple of OTA practices, which made me think he could challenge for the sixth receiver spot. And then his training camp and preseason were entirely unremarkable.
- Norton on Smith (Aug. 24 – 3:15 p.m.): Smith earned a snap share with Tyrique Stevenson last season opposite Jaylon Johnson, but was third in this year’s camp contest for the job behind Stevenson and Nahshon Wright. Losing Smith for the year — due to a significant knee injury sustained last Sunday vs. the Bills — is still a tough blow to the Bears’ corner depth.
- Jahns on Scott (Aug. 26 – 12:40 p.m.): Scott made a late push to make the team in camp, which included practicing with the team on Monday. But the numbers were working against him after Olamide Zaccheaus and Devin Duvernay were signed in free agency and Luther Burden III was drafted.
- Norton on Wheeler (Aug. 26 – 12:45 p.m.): Wheeler was a guy you wanted to see succeed based on the story alone. Tore his ACL last preseason, battled back to have a decent camp and two-touchdown showing against the Bills in the second preseason game. But his pass-protection was lackluster, diminishing his value as a third or fourth option.
- Hoge on Elkin (Aug. 26 – 1:05 p.m.): The fact that the rookie longsnapper made it all the way to the final cuts is a strong indication that he pushed Scott Daly at the position. If he’s not picked up elsewhere, Elkin could return should the Bears need him.
- Hoge on Pickens (Aug. 26 – 1:10 p.m.): The 2023 third-round pick rarely flashed in two seasons and was always a long shot to make it this year. A groin injury in 2024 didn’t help his development.
- Hoge on Kpassagnon (Aug. 26 – 1:15 p.m.): The expansion and pliability of practice squads make it much easier to stash veterans like Kpassagnon there for a few weeks while not exposing a younger player to waivers. He could still be elevated from the practice squad (assuming that’s where he ends up) in Week 1.
- Hoge on Walker, Jones & Hardy (Aug. 26 – 2:28 p.m.): Roster won’t be official until 3:00, but Jahdae Walker and Carl Jones were among the 48 players I counted practicing today. Daniel Hardy, too.
