This Week in Chicago Blackhawks History: Bobby Hull sets a franchise mark, Al Secord racks up the points & more

This has been an exciting week in the long and storied past of the Chicago Blackhawks. They made television history with their rivals from the Big Apple, numerous Hall of Famers set personal milestones both for and against the team, and many players were born throughout the decades. Let’s hop in the CHGO time machine and buckle up for our trip back through the years to relive all these great moments.

Jan. 5

1928 – Fred Glover was born in Toronto, ON. He was acquired with Enio Sclisizzi from the Detroit Red Wings for cash on Aug. 14, 1953. The center had four goals and six points in 31 games before being traded to the Cleveland Barons of the AHL for Vic Lynn on Jan. 16, 1953. Glover served as a player/coach for the Barons until 1968. He coached seven seasons in the NHL with the Oakland Seals and Los Angeles Kings.

1943 – John Brenneman was born in Fort Erie, ON. He had one goal in 17 games before getting dealt to the New York Rangers with Wayne Hillman and Doug Robinson for Wally Chevrier, Camille Henry, Don Johns, and Billy Taylor.

1957 – The Blackhawks and Rangers were featured in the first NHL game to broadcast in the United States, as CBS showed the afternoon tilt from Madison Square Garden. Bud Palmer and Fred Cusick were on the call as the Rangers won 4-1. Glen Skov had the lone goal for the Blackhawks.

1961 – Basil McRae was born in Beaverton, ON. While spending much of his 16-season NHL career playing for rivals like the Minnesota North Stars and St. Louis Blues, McRae signed with the Blackhawks on Oct. 9, 1996. He was pointless in eight games before hanging up his skates.

1964 – James Camazzola was born in Vancouver, BC. The Blackhawks drafted the left wing in the 10th round (196th overall) of the 1982 NHL Entry Draft. He had no points in three career NHL games but played professionally in Europe until 2001.

1967 – “Mr. Hockey” Gordie Howe scored to lead the Red Wings to a 6-4 win over the visiting Blackhawks. This gave Howe 700 total career goals in the regular season and playoffs combined.

1979 – Kyle Calder was born in Mannville, AB. The Blackhawks drafted the left wing in the fifth round of the 1997 NHL Entry Draft. He later was part of the “ABC Line” in the early 2000s with Tyler Arnason and Mark Bell. He had 85 goals and 210 points in 359 games for the Blackhawks. On Aug. 4, 2006, he was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers for Michal Handzus. Calder was traded back to the Blackhawks on Feb. 26, 2007, for Lasse Kukkonen and a third-round pick but was immediately flipped to the Red Wings for Jason Williams.

1999 – Filip Roos was born in Gothenburg, Sweden. The defenseman signed with the Blackhawks in 2022. He has a goal and three points in 15 NHL games this season. Roos is currently in the AHL with the Rockford IceHogs and has three goals and seven points in 10 games.

Jan. 6

1907 – Carl Voss was born in Chelsea, MA. He signed with the Blackhawks on Dec. 6, 1937. The center played the final 33 games of his NHL career in Chicago and scored three goals and 11 points. After his playing career ended, he became a referee and officiated in various minor leagues, including the AHL. He later served as the NHL’s referee-in-chief for 15 seasons and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as a builder in 1974.

1937 – Doug Barkley was born in Lethbridge, AB. The defenseman was scoreless in six games for the Blackhawks before being traded to the Red Wings for Len Lunde and John McKenzie on June 5, 1962. He suffered a career-ending injury against the Blackhawks on Jan. 30, 1966, when Doug Mohns hit him in the right eye with his stick while battling for the puck.

1983 – Adam Burish was born in Madison, WI. The Blackhawks drafted the right win in the ninth round (282nd overall) of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. He had 11 goals and 21 points in 169 games and got his name on the Stanley Cup in 2010. He signed with the Dallas Stars shortly after the championship season concluded.

2015 – The Blackhawks put up 54 shots on goal against the Colorado Avalanche, but goaltender Semyon Varlamov kept them all out for a 2-0 win. The 54 saves were the most made in a regular-season road shutout since the NHL began counting shots on goal at the start of the 1955-56 season.

Jan. 7

1928 – Benny Woit was born in Fort William, ON. After winning three Stanley Cups with the Red Wings, he was acquired on May 27, 1955, as part of an eight-player trade. He played nine scoreless games for the Blackhawks before the Montreal Canadiens claimed him off waivers.

1961 – Rod Buskas was born in Wetaskiwin, AB. The defenseman was acquired from the Los Angeles Kings on Oct. 28, 1991, for Chris Norton. He played the final 46 games of his 11-season career with the Blackhawks and picked up four assists and 106 penalty minutes.

1968 – Bobby Hull found the back net two times in the Blackhawks’ 4-2 win over the Boston Bruins. These two tallies made him the fourth player in NHL history to score 400 goals.

1987 – Al Secord scored four second-period goals in a span of 8:24 to lead the Blackhawks to a 6-4 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs. Rookie Mark LaVarre had four assists, with three coming on Secord goals.

1989 – Mike Ridley set a Washington Capitals’ team record by picking up six assists in a 6-3 win over the Blackhawks. He became the fourth NHL player to assist on all six of his team’s goals in a game.

Jan 8.

1927 – Wally Hergesheimer was born in Winnipeg, MB. The right wing was acquired from the Rangers for Red Sullivan on June 19, 1956. He had two goals and 10 points in 41 games for the Blackhawks during the 1956-57 season. On May 5, 1958, Hergesheimer was traded to the Buffalo Bison of the AHL for Kenny Wharram, who became a fixture in Chicago for the next 11 seasons.

1929 – Steve Witiuk was born in Winnipeg, MB. He played 33 games for the Blackhawks during the 1951-52 season and scored three goals and 11 points. The right-wing was traded to the Maple Leafs for George Ford and Murray Wilke in January of 1958.

1945 – First-year Maple Leafs forward Howie Meeker scored five goals in a 10-4 defeat of the Blackhawks. His five goals set a new NHL single-game rookie record.

1970 – Jon Klemm was born in Cranbrook, BC. The veteran defenseman signed with the Blackhawks on July 1, 2001, after winning two Stanley Cups with the Avalanche. He had six goals and 37 points in 171 games over three seasons. On Nov. 17, 2003, Klemm was traded to the Dallas Stars with a fourth-round pick for Stephane Robidas and a second-round pick used to select Jakub Sindel.

2003 – Rookie goaltenders Michael Leighton and Zac Bierk dueled in a scoreless tie between the Blackhawks and Phoenix Coyotes. This was the first time in NHL history that two netminders recorded their first career shutouts in the same game.

Jan. 9

1894 – Helge Bostrom was born in Gimli, MN. The defender played 96 games for the Blackhawks between 1929 and 1933, scoring three goals and six points.

1955 – Bruce Boudreau was born in Toronto, ON. Before becoming a successful head coach, he played center for 141 NHL games. The last seven of those games came in a Blackhawks uniform during the 1985-86 season. He scored one goal in his brief time with Chicago.

1965 – Two of the greatest players to ever play for the Blackhawks had big nights in a 7-4 win over the Red Wings. Hull scored twice to give him 259 goals, the most in franchise history. Stan Mikita chipped in with a goal and three assists.

1975 – Anders Eriksson was born in Bolinas, Sweden. The defenseman was part of one of the most unpopular trades in team history. On March 23, 1999, he was acquired with two first-round picks from the Red Wings for Chris Chelios. He had five goals and 41 points in 97 games before being traded to Florida Panthers for Jaroslav Spacek on Nov. 6, 2000.

1992 – Dominik Hasek made 21 saves to earn his first career shutout in a 2-0 win over the visiting Maple Leafs. This was his only shutout in 25 games with the Blackhawks.

Jan. 10

1898 – George Hay was born in Listowel, ON. He had been a star in western Canada for over a decade when he joined the Blackhawks for their inaugural season in 1926. Hay scored the first goal in franchise history and finished the season with 14 goals and 24 points in 35 games. He was traded to the Detroit Cougars with Percy Traub for cash on April 11, 1927. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1958.

1967 – Danton Cole was born in Pontiac, MI. He was acquired from the New York Islanders for Bob Halkidis on Feb. 2, 1996. The forward played two games with the Blackhawks and did not register a point.

1993 – A pair of Blackhawks set personal milestones one year later during a 5-4 loss to the Kings. Hall of Famer Michel Goulet picked up an assist while playing his 1,000th NHL game, while Steve Larmer had a goal and an assist to become the fourth player to score 900 points with the team.

1998 – Tony Amonte had a goal and an assist to lead the Blackahwks to a 4-3 win in Toronto. Maple Leafs legend Mats Sundin scored two goals and added an assist for his 250th NHL goal and 600th career point. Current Blackhawks assistant coach Derek King had a goal and an assist for the Maple Leafs.

Jan. 11

1917 – Red Hamill was born in Toronto, ON. The Bruins traded the left wing to Chicago for cash on Dec. 18, 1941. He played 370 games for the Blackhawks over eight seasons and scored 112 goals and 192 points.

1949 – Bobby Sheehan was born in Weymouth, MA. He was acquired from the California Golden Seals with Dick Redmond for Darryl Maggs on Dec. 5, 1972. He spent the next three seasons in the World Hockey Association (WHA) before playing for the Blackhawks during the 1975-76 season. After scoring 11 goals and 31 points in 78 games, he signed with the Red Wings the following offseason.

1988 – Denis Savard picked up an assist for his 800th NHL point as the Blackhawks and Rangers skated to a 2-2 tie.

1990 – Secord scored his sixth and final career hat trick in the Blackhawks’ 5-4 win at the Flyers.
