Instant reactions: Injury-plagued Bears blasted by Jets in the rain

Kevin Kaduk Avatar
November 27, 2022

No one expected the Chicago Bears to have much of a chance without Justin Fields under center for Sunday’s game against the New York Jets.

And Trevor Siemian and the Bears spent much of the afternoon proving everyone right, getting soaked by the Mike White and the Jets in a 31-10 loss for their fifth straight defeat. The Bears are now 3-9 as they head into Packers Week.

Here are our instant reactions to the loss …

Well, that went as expected. I wasn’t surprised to see the Bears struggle to score points without Justin Fields, but I was surprised with the amount of miscommunication with Trevor Siemian at quarterback. The Bears were frequently slow to lineup and snap the ball. The operation just wasn’t good enough. Injuries to Eddie Jackson and Darnell Mooney made it a bad day for the Bears. But at least the Panthers won, right? The Bears currently hold the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL Draft.

Justin Fields looked sad in the rain. Eddie Jackson and Darnell Mooney got hurt. The Flus did some weird Trevor Siemian Nathan Peterman pregame chicanery. All in all the Bears would have been better off to have spent their entire Thanksgiving weekend in Chicago. On to Green Bay and the will he or won’t he play Justin Fields talk.

It’s hard to imagine a worse outcome than what just happened at MetLife Stadium. The Bears were blown out by the Mike White-led Jets. The game was tough enough to watch, but the injuries in this game were far worse. Eddie Jackson had to be carted to the locker room because of a foot injury, and Darnell Mooney failed to finish the game due to a left ankle injury. Two of the Bears’ best players hurt and it’s uncertain for how long. The Bears just can’t catch a break in 2022.

U-G-L-Y. Injuries continue to pile up for the Bears. And there were people that wanted Justin Fields to play in this game?!? Any questions about what this team can do without Justin Fields has been answered. The answer is nothing. Depleted defense. Depleted Offensive Line. No answers from Matt Eberflus or Luke Getsy. The only answer is Justin Fields. He is the rising tide that lifts all ships on this team. Next week; if healthy, he will drop 30 points on the Packers with his eyes closed. For now, another solid tank loss moving up the draft board with the Broncos losing to the Panthers. Tank on.

I can’t believe there was a time when I was worried the Bears might win this game and continue their long-standing tradition of winning meaningless games to screw up their draft position. The defense was already bad, but the unit’s injuries are piling up and it’s hard to imagine how they’re going to stop anyone left on the rest of their schedule.
