Justin Fields' phenomenal performance proves he is the Chicago Bears' franchise

Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields evaded the pressure, pump faked, dashed to his left and never looked back as he ran for a 61-yard touchdown on Sunday, the longest by a quarterback in team history.

And I lost my marbles.

(Well, internally that is. I’m not allowed to cheer in the press box.)

Seriously, just thinking about it again gives me goosebumps.

It was at that moment that I looked down at the field and felt confident that I was watching my franchise quarterback. The guy to lead this team to greatness.

Make no mistake about it, Fields has been playing at an extremely high level over his last three games. However, it was this moment that got me to buy in without any reservation — one million percent.

But Fields wasn’t done. He was only getting started with his record-setting day.

The second-year quarterback in his 19th start would go on to beat Michael Vick’s record for most rushing yards by a quarterback in a regular season game as he mounted 178 yards on 15 carries.

I was sweating bullets …

When the offense was on the field for the final time, not only was I wishing for the team to march down and secure a victory, but I was also counting every yard Fields would gain on the ground and yearning for him to secure that NFL record.

I’ve seen enough subpar quarterbacks in my lifetime watching the Bears. This feels different. This feels like the beginning of something special. I believe that with every fiber of my being.

He is that dude.

Fields’ ability to make magic happen with his feet is an art form. It’s one that Bears fans are really starting to appreciate. As they should. He’s proven he can be a rushing threat at any given moment, and that makes life hell for opposing defenses.

But it’s not just his rushing ability, Fields has grown into an effective passer at the professional level.

Against the Vikings in Week 5, he had his first game with a passer rating over 100. Now, just four weeks later, he’s done it back-to-back following his 120 passer rating in Dallas with a 106.7 performance versus the Dolphins.

When Fields was asked about his record-breaking performance after the game, he didn’t have much to say.

“Yeah, just credit God. Like I said before, I’m just — it’s all because of Him, not really because of me. He’s blessed me with these gifts and I’m just happy to use them,” Fields said.

But that’s just who he is. He’s not one to pat himself on the back too much.

Now if he won’t, I will.

Fields is, without question, carrying this team.

For a young quarterback that was scrambling for answers (and his life) just over a month ago, to be one that is orchestrating a handful of scoring drives per game against solid defenses is a turnaround to be proud of.

He’s doing things no quarterback has ever done before, and if he keeps on his current trajectory, Fields will become a household name in the NFL.

After being hesitant to fully embrace Fields for fear of being let down and hurt again by another Bears’ quarterback, I am no longer stopping myself from fully believing in him.

And if you’re a Bears Fan still on the fence, it’s time to take a deep breath and embrace the future of this franchise. Because that is exactly who Fields is.

He’s carried this team for three weeks now, and I for one, cannot wait to see what heights QB1 will take the Bears down the road, but for now, I am going sit back and enjoy the ride.
