The greatest game in Chicago Bears history came on January 26, 1986 when the squad famously bludgeoned the New England Patriots 46-10 at the Superdome.
Between the dominance of that era’s Bears teams and the Patriots’ quick slide into mediocrity, it was hard to believe that New England would ever overtake the Bears as a an organization. But they’ve done just that, winning six Super Bowl titles and eight of the last 10 games played against the Bears.
Can our squad start turning the tide around now that Tom Brady is gone? It will be a tall order given that Bill Belichick still leads the Patriots, but that’s the challenge the Bears are up against in Week 7 of Monday Night Football.
It doesn’t matter who plays quarterback for the Patriots on Monday night as the Bears will most likely be on the wrong side of the final score. New England proved they can shut down the best rushing attack in the league last week, and you better believe Bill Belichick will be looking to do the same to the Bears as it’s the only real threat the Patriots have to worry about. I expect them to contain Fields and force him to beat their defense from the pocket, which is something we haven’t seen a ton of from Fields. The Bears’ run defense and red zone issues may be on full display as the Patriots run the ball better than most inside the 20. Oh, and Belichick has the extra motivation of surpassing George Halas for second place on the all-time wins list for NFL head coaches. You better believe he would love nothing more than to accomplish that feat against Papa Bear’s team.
The Bears rise up on Monday night and stun the football world. Justin Fields plays error-free football and the defense is able to get two key turnovers from a flustered out of sync Mac Jones. Kindle Vildor continues his impressive run with a late interception. David Montgomery has his best game of the year.
The Bears are gonna lose some games they should win, like last week. And maybe win a couple games they should lose, like this week? The Bears have fallen frustratingly short the last 3 weeks but this Monday Night, Justin Fields & Company do just enough to get over the top. Converting in the red zone a couple of times and the Bears solid secondary holds a rusty Mac Jones in check. Bears Win!
We’re officially back to the point where the Bears are being under valued on the spread as +7.5 underdogs (like they were in Week 1 against the 49ers when they won outright). I’m not willing to say they’ll win this game, but the Bears are healthy and are going to continue to be a feisty team that stays in games. The Patriots are the better team, but none of their wins are that impressive. Ultimately, New England’s run game grinds out the win in the fourth quarter. I won’t be surprised if the Bears win though.
Unless Justin Fields has a performance as he did against the Steelers last season, which was the last time he played on Monday Night Football, then the Bears won’t have much chance in this one. The Patriots’ defense knows how to get pressure on opposing quarterbacks and that shouldn’t be an issue for New England in this game.
Belichick will build you up only to tear you down. It’s one of the many mind games he plays, and he used it this week when talking about the Bears. Like Liam Neeson’s nemesis says on the phone during “Taken”: “Good luck.”
Patriots play well at home. Look for them to exploit the holes in the Bears defense (outside zone, soft coverage).
One matchup in this game matters more than every other one: Luke Getsy vs. Bill Belichick. Who should you put your money on?
Fields plays to his strengths and limits unforced errors for the first road win of the season.
