10 quick thoughts: Poor start turns the screws on Bears leadership

Good morning Chicago.

The Bears are somehow worse than last year and the Cubs can’t win a game when it matters most. Meanwhile, the Sox haven’t played a meaningful game all year and the Bulls are gearing up for a run at the seventh seed in the East if all goes well — though it most assuredly won’t.

Can I interest you in some Connor Bedard hat trick highlights?

Let’s get into 10 quick thoughts about Sunday’s 27-17 loss to the Buccaneers

  1. The Bears have now lost 12 straight games dating back to last season. They’re two losses away from being listed on this Wikipedia page of all-time NFL losing streaks and they’ll likely be halfway there after next week’s visit to Kansas City.
  2. Should the Bears move to 0-4 with a loss to the Broncos, I would think somebody is going to be paying for the start with their jobs and those somebodies are Luke Getsy and Alan Williams. Will it make a difference? Probably not.
  3. Ryan Poles and Matt Eberflus were left a royal mess by the Ryan and Matt who previously held their jobs, so it’s a little unfair to pin the size of that losing streak on whatever aptitude they may lack for their jobs. Last year was implosion by design, a trick that paid off in this city for the Cubs, didn’t for the Sox and looks to be bearing serious fruit for the Blackhawks.
  4. That said, the presence of Justin Fields’ talents turns the screws much faster for Poles and Eberflus. Right or wrong, the public perception was that Fields had the potential to be a generational quarterback in town. At the very least, his talent level should place him far above the pile of has-been and never-was quarterbacks we’ve had to suffer through in this town. If QB1 is reduced to junker status under Eberflus and Getsy, it’s a resume stain that won’t wash off easily.
  5. It also pushes the window back at least another 3-4 years and it’s clear none of us have any patience for even 3-4 weeks with the Super Bowl drought approaching 40 years.
  6. The wild card in the entire immediate future of the Bears is Kevin Warren, the boss who came in AFTER the current power structure was in place and holds the hiring and firing power for everyone in the building. It’ll be interesting to see if and when he starts making his voice heard in this season’s soap opera.
  7. I have no idea how you spend $170 million in the offseason and fail to improve either the offensive or defensive line, but Ryan Poles seems to have done it.
  8. At one point during Sunday’s game, the Bears were leading 7-3 and blocked a Tampa Bay field goal attempt to take control near midfield. The offense responded with a three-and-out and at that point I think we pretty much knew how this game was going to go.
  9. I hate that I’ve already visited Tankathon.com this early in the season.
  10. I don’t know the specifics of how this Justin Fields story will end, but I’m glad I haven’t invested in a No. 1 jersey yet. The No. 10 and No. 52 in the back of my closet don’t need any more company.
